Jake de Grazia graduated from Brown University in 2003,
enrolled in a nine week intensive Chinese language program
at Middlebury College, and immediately fled the country.
After four months in northeastern Australia picking fruit,
scrubbing decks, and teaching tourists how to snorkel, he
moved to Beijing. He spent his first two years there
studying Chinese, translating, interpreting, and doing
capacity building and fundraising work for Chinese
microfinance institutions. In early 2006, he was hired by
the founders of LanguageCalls, a technology company
delivering live one on one tutoring over the internet. He
has recently returned to the USA to pursue another startup
project, a website to help people consume more responsibly.
The site is a brand comparison tool that aggregates expert
opinions and user contributions to identify which companies
are taking what steps to create a more sustainable and
humane world.
